What is The British Council?

The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. We create friendly knowledge and understanding between the people of the UK and other countries. We do this by making a positive contribution to the UK and the countries we work with – changing lives by creating opportunities, building connections and engendering trust.

As you progress through videos which show the best of contemporary UK Arts, or which feature professional and entrepreneurial content from leaders in the field, you will get what you need to stay ahead. 

Do I have to register?

You can interact with all of our content without registering. If you would like to see personalised feeback about your performance and earn rewards and badges, then you will need to register. Registration is free, and also fast and easy. Learn more here.

How can I register on The English Channel?

Registration is easy and convenient. You can sign-up by choosing a username and providing an email, or through Facebook, Google, or Twitter. Registration can be found here.

Is registration free of charge?

The English Channel is completely free to use and has no charges or paid services. Once you register an account, you can experience a fully personalised learning environment at no cost.

Do I need to use specific devices to access the website?

The English Channel can be accessed on laptops, smartphones, and tablets; including Android and iOS devices.

Do I have to interact with both the English and the Build Career Skills content?

All video content is available for you to use whenever you want - there is no obligation to access both types. You can do as little, or as much, as you like, when you like. 

Will my work be saved?

After you register, you will have a unique account which tracks your progress and records how many videos you have watched, as well as your scores from answering questions correctly. You can also earn badges which reflect your performance, and these are also saved to your account. There is no need to worry about losing your work.

Can I retry questions?

Of course! The English Channel is a flexible platform and allows you to replay videos, or retry specific questions, to make sure that you can learn and interact at your own pace.

Where can I find more information about these videos?

All videos have a written summary of their content underneath the media window. As well as providing more information, this text provides the name of the partner who provided the content, and a link to their websites and media channels for you to explore further.

How often does the content change?

The English Channel updates on a quarterly basis. But there is no need for you to keep checking – once you register, we will contact you with an email letting you know when new content and learning summaries have been added.

How is the best way to watch a video on a mobile device?

We recommend using the device in landscape mode, as this will utilise most of your screen and interactive questions will appear clearer. So no need to enable full screen with this approach.
