Help | The English Channel

What is The British Council?

The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. We create friendly knowledge and understanding between the people of the UK and other countries. We do this by making a positive contribution to the UK and the countries we work with – changing lives by creating opportunities, building connections and engendering trust.

Who is The English Channel for?

The English Channel is for you: whether you want to improve your English or your career skills, we have got the content and the know-how to get you on your way. As you progress through videos which show the best of contemporary UK Arts, or which feature professional and entrepreneurial content from leaders in the field, you will get what you need to stay ahead.

Do I have to create an account?

You can complete our Introduction packs without an account. If you would like to see more of our exclusive content, and keep learning, then you will need an account. Registration is free, and also fast and easy. Learn more here.

How can I register on The English Channel?

Registration is easy and convenient. You can sign-up by choosing a username and providing an email, or through Facebook, Google, or Twitter. Registration can be found here.

Is registration free of charge?

The English Channel is completely free to use and has no charges or paid services. Once you register an account, all content can be accessed with no need of further action or payment from you.

Do I need to use specific devices to access the website?

The English Channel can be accessed on laptops, smartphones, and tablets; including Android and iOS devices

Do I have to use both the English and the Build Career Skills section?

Each section is available for you to use whenever you want to explore and interact with our content. There is no obligation to use both.

Will my work be saved?

After you register, you will have a unique account which tracks your progress through our packs, and records how many videos you have watched, as well as your scores from answering questions correctly. You can also earn badges which reflect your performance, and these too are saved to your account. There is no need to worry about losing your work.

Can I retry questions?

Of course! The English Channel is a flexible platform and allows you to replay videos, or retry specific questions, to make sure that you can learn and interact at your own pace.

How can I access content summaries?

On the ‘Build Career Skills’ platform, each pack has its own contents page which displays all of the available videos. Once all of the videos are complete, a ‘Download Learning Materials’ button appears, providing you with a written summary of all the actionable and useful points from the videos in the pack.

Where can I find more information about these videos?

All videos have a written summary of their content underneath the media window. As well as providing more information, this text provides the name of the partner who provided the content, and a link to their websites and media channels for you to explore further.

How often does the content change?

The English Channel updates on a quarterly basis. But there is no need for you to keep checking – once you register, we will contact you with an email letting you know when new content and learning summaries have been added.

How do you complete a pack?

Each pack contains at least five videos. Each video has got a number of interactions which are there to help you either learn useful new English vocabulary or to get the most important points out of our Build Career Skills videos. Completing all interactions from all videos means that you have completed one pack.

How is the best way to watch a video on a mobile device?

We recommend using the device in landscape mode, as this will utilise most of your screen and interactive questions will appear clearer. So no need to enable full screen with this approach.

When do I get my certificate

When you complete all of the videos in Build your career skills, your certificate will be available to download, when awarded with the English Major Badge via the popup, or from the profile section (right-hand column). There is no certificate for the Learn English section.
